Female Fertility Tests

Ovarian reserve

  • There is a relatively new blood test available at Fertility Bristol that measures levels of Anti-Mullerian Hormone – or AMH – to give an indication of the number of eggs remaining and reproductive potential.
  • Other tests include FSH/ LH and estradiol.

Ovulation and Hormone tests

  • Progesterone: test to confirm ovulation
  • FSH/ LH: test to assess ovarian reserve and hormone balance
  • Estradiol: test to assess ovarian activity
  • Testosterone & SHBG: help us diagnose polycystic ovarian syndrome and assess hormonal imbalancesSH
  • TSH: helps us make sure your thyroid gland is not over or under active.
  • Prolactin: useful test for helping diagnose the reason for irregular periods

Fertility Ultrasound scan:

Can help identify problems affecting your ability to conceive such as:

  • Polyps, Fibroids and thickness of womb lining (endometrium)
  • Ovarian reserve – antral follicle count (AFC)
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Amenorrhoea (lack of or irregular periods)
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Premature Menopause
  • Damaged Fallopian Tubes (hydrosalpinx)

Fallopian Tubes

  • HyCoSy: Ultrasound and dye (contrast) test
  • HSG: X-ray test
  • Laparoscopy: the gold standard test which involves a minor key-hole operation under anaesthesia
  • Chlamydia blood test for blocked tubes
