JERSEY MUMS CHOOSE BCRM FOR SECOND IVF BABY
BCRM, proved a magnet for same-sex couple Emma and Laura Poulliquen, even though their home is in Jersey.
When the pair had their first IVF baby in 2020, using donor sperm, they were living in Staffordshire and attended a fertility clinic in Manchester. But by the time baby number two was wanted, the family had relocated to Emma’s native Jersey, so their preferred option for treatment was BCRM.
The couple had met three years earlier when they were both 30, were happy when an “adult conversation” revealed a shared desire to have children, and in 2020 Laura gave birth to baby Harper who was conceived using donor sperm.
Second time around they visited Jersey Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Services for their initial assessments and were given a choice of going either to London or to BCRM in Bristol for their egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
The women were impressed by BCRM’s success rate and patient reviews, so they made contact and arranged for the remainder of the frozen sperm used in Harper’s conception to be transferred to Bristol.
Since both women wanted the experience of being pregnant and giving birth, it was now Emma’s turn, and she remembers their visit to BCRM for her egg collection fondly.
“We wanted to take Harper with us, although she obviously couldn’t come to the clinic, so we booked a holiday and stayed in the spa hotel just close to BCRM, and we had a really wonderful time,” she said.
“The location was perfect and the whole thing was a very positive experience.
“Although Laura couldn’t come in with me because she had Harper with her, the team at BCRM kept her informed every step of the way and were just lovely.”
A fresh embryo transfer on the same visit was not possible because the IVF meds had overstimulated Emma’s ovaries, so the resultant embryos were frozen and she returned for her embryo transfer three weeks later.
This visit took place in term-time and, since the mums did not wish to take Harper out of school, Emma had to make it alone. She recalled having a stressful journey with some delays.
“I was worried I was going to be late,” she said. “But the BCRM team were so accommodating and entirely put me at my ease.
“They could see I was a bit nervous about being there on my own, and they were so friendly, really phenomenal.
“They took photos which I was able to share with Laura straightaway which made it feel like a family-oriented day not a medical procedure at all. We were so grateful for that.”
The very first transfer resulted in a healthy and straightforward pregnancy although Emma, who has MS, was carefully monitored throughout because of her condition.
Baby Asha Rose was born a healthy 8lb 8oz in July 2025, delivered by C-section - which was “not the plan” but was necessary because Emma was carrying an excess of amniotic fluid.
“Otherwise, the whole experience of having Asha was just as I’d hoped it would be,” Emma said, “and Laura and I are so delighted with our little family.
“We consider ourselves very lucky and we want to say a huge thank you to the team at BCRM for the amazing work they do, and for being such delightful people.”
