Here at BCRM, Fertility is our speciality and it is important to us to help where we can as people navigate their fertility journey.
We offer extensive testing and all forms of fertility treatment to help you create and begin a family.
Below are some of the conditions we treat and help manage daily:
Many women suffer with absent, infrequent, heavy or painful periods – and it can affect both fertility and day-to-day life. We have the expertise to investigate the cause of troublesome periods and can advise on the best course of treatment if appropriate.
Ovulation problems are quite common, this could be due to hormonal problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), age, reduced ovarian reserve, stress, excessive exercise as well as other issues.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a very common condition that affects the function of the ovaries. It affects millions of women across the UK and is characterized by high levels of ‘male’ hormones, cysts on the ovaries and a lack of regular ovulation.
Symptoms of PCOS can include irregular or absent periods, difficulty getting pregnant, weight gain, acne and hair growth or hair loss. We have helped many women with PCOS go on to have a baby or successfully manage the condition.
Blocked fallopian tubes prevent the successful meeting of egg and sperm and accounts for around one in four fertility problems. For some women with blocked tubes, IVF offers the best chance for achieving pregnancy but for others, specialist surgery can hold the key to successfully conceiving a baby naturally.
BCRM’s Valentine Akande is an expert in this field, having helped hundreds of women with this problem and published numerous research papers on this topic.
Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacs that grow on the ovary. They are common and usually harmless but symptoms of an ovarian cyst can include pelvic pain, period problems, bloating, indigestion, a frequent need to urinate and difficulty going to the loo.
The treatment for ovarian cysts depends on the size of the cyst and the symptoms that occur. We are able to put your mind at ease and offer the necessary tests to diagnose an ovarian cyst.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that vary in size and are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue. Symptoms can include heavy or painful periods, abdominal pain, constipation and a frequent need to urinate.
We offer comprehensive treatment for fibroids to ease symptoms. Medication is usually the first port of call, but surgery is sometimes necessary. We are able to advise on the best course of action based on your individual needs.
Premature ovarian failure or menopause
Premature ovarian failure is when the ovary stops working, normally before the age of 45 years because of loss of eggs. Symptoms include hot flushes, irregular or lack of periods, night sweats, mood changes and loss of libido. Treatment for these symptoms can include hormone replacement therapy. Premature ovarian failure does mean that fertility is reduced and treatment can be challenging but very successful if egg donation treatment is used.
There are a number of treatments that can help to improve the quality of your sperm, or help it to reach your partner’s womb. If your sperm quality is affected by hormone problems such as male hypogonadism, medicines may help.
Our team can advise you on vitamin supplements or lifestyle changes that may improve sperm but in some cases IVF treatment using ICSI will be required.
